In the Butterflies mini-quests, each one begins with a random gem at the bottom of the game board transforming into a like-colored Butterfly. After each legal move, the gem moves up one square of the board and another Butterfly appears. The goal of each mini-quest is to clear a specific number of Butterfly Gems before any go beyond the top of the board, where the Spider Gem awaits.
Beside the game board is a large flower that tracks the number of Butterfly Gems collected. Upon clearing a Butterfly from the board, the gem flies toward the flower and then disappears.
When a Butterfly enters the second row of the game board, the gem starts trembling. When a Butterfly reaches the top of the board, the gem quivers even more and the vertical edges of the board emit a pulsing red glow. If a Butterfly Gem goes past the top of the board, the mini-quest ends in which the Spider Gem captures the Butterfly.
- If a Hypercube occupies a square at the bottom of the game board, Butterfly Gems will not spawn on that square. However, this does not occur in the Nintendo DS version of Bejeweled 3.
